My Column in the San Antonio “Express-News” - What the “Cool Kids” from San Antonio Are Going To Be Doing at SXSW 2010
March 4, 2010
Today’s column in the San Antonio “Express-News” illustrates the collective smarts and fun that is converging on Austin next week at SXSW Interactive.
The column and this video are just a sampling of who’s doing what. And there’s more coming.
I’ll be teaming up with Nan Palmero from SalesBy5 to do daily reports for the online edition of the paper known as MySA.com.
Stay tuned for more and thanks for reading.

How GVTC Competes Against Big-Ass Broadband / Broadcast TV Service Providers like AT&T, Time Warner, DirectTV, etc.
February 27, 2010
GVTC began more than half a century ago as a telephone cooperative with the purpose of providing modern phone service to remote parts of the Texas Hill Country and other rural areas to the north of San Antonio. Today, GVTC has evolved into a comprehensive communications provider with offerings that go well beyond residential and business telephone service. The products and services also include cable TV, high-speed Internet, security, long distance, advanced data services and more. GVTC remains true to its roots as a cooperative. In fact, it is the largest telephone cooperative in Texas, whose service area spans 2,000 square miles and eleven counties.
So, how do they compete against the big-ass providers like AT&T, TimeWarner, Dish, etc? They come up with a “dish of their own.” Think in the vein of going hyper local and good, local food. Texas Hill Country residents have long enjoyed the region’s bold flavors, farm-fresh ingredients and creative cuisine. Now, from the comfort of their homes, they’ll be able to learn from some of the region’s best chefs.
That’s where GVTC comes in and launches a new 30-minute program “Hill Country Chefs,” which will feature culinary professionals from renowned South Central Texas restaurants talking about their cuisine and demonstrating how to prepare signature dishes. The locally produced show debuted earlier this month with Jorge Torres of The Creek Restaurant in Boerne. Jorge demonstrates how to prepare Shrimp Alicia, the restaurant’s popular entrée of lightly breaded jumbo shrimp in a lemon butter sauce.
“Since GVTC is headquartered in the Texas Hill Country, we understand the kind of local content that fits our customers’ interests, needs and lifestyles,” said Jeff Mnick, GVTC’s vice president-sales and marketing. “‘Hill Country Chefs’ lets our viewers learn more about world-class dining available right in their backyard, and it enables them to cook great local cuisine in their own kitchens.” They also can do local content in ways that the big-ass services providers can’t.
The show airs on GVTC Channel 14 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11 a.m.
Upcoming episodes of “Hill Country Chefs” will feature:
· Mike Romano of Mike’s in the Village in Bulverde
· John Boehm of Spring Branch Bistro in Spring Branch
· Nabur Cortez of El Chaparral in Boerne
· Michael McClure of Limestone Grille at Ye Kendall Inn in Boerne
· Ray Demedovski of Tuscany Grill in Spring Branch
I’d love to hear from GVTC customers. Let us know how their service is and of course their innovations in programming like this.
Pear Analytics’ Website Analyzer: Oh - there’s an app for that
February 24, 2010

Introducing the Website Analyzer for the iPhone. Get it.
San Antonio’s Pear Analytics is making it easier and cooler than ever to get your Website Analyzer reports.
Simply download the free iPhone app and get your analysis on the go. What’s awesome is that you can store your website reports in the History section and easily reference them, or re-run them. And that’s cool because now you don’t have to dig through your email to find that report from that website from that meeting last week.
In the App Store on your phone, search for “pear analytics”, or go online and get it.
My Interview with Dr. Eli Opper, Israel’s Chief Scientist, prior to the Texas Israel Chamber of Commerces’ Cleanovation Event - Austin; #TxCleantech
February 22, 2010
When you think of the term, “Chief Scientist,” you might not associate it with the commercializing and export of technology. In the case of the Office of the Chief Scientist, Dr. Eli Opper is actually part of the State of Israel’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor. And his role is to help bring Israel innovation to market through its Foreign Trade Administration Investment Promotion Center.
I had a chance to meet Dr. Opper at a reception last night, prior to the opening of the Texas Israel Chamber of Commerce’s Cleanovation event which begins today in Austin.
There are over 200 people from Texas and Israel convening, and getting down to business.
If you think clean or green, think water, the grid, and sustainability, and combine it with the mindsets of Texans and Israelis and you have a compelling setting for the creation of new business, economic and development and making our world a cleaner, greener and more sustainable planet.
I’ll be posting throughout the day - mostly on Twitter. Watch for #TxCleantech.
Worth Watching:
For related viewing, here’s another I found on YouTube which further explains Dr. Opper’s role, where he outlines his focus on economic development from Israel’s economic value chain of R & D.

Att: Startups - There’s still time to apply for a panel position at the Beta Summit / March 4
February 9, 2010
Innotech San Antonio is still looking for a few good tech startups to apply for a panel position at this year’s Innotech Beta Summit March 4.
So far, the Rackspace/Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce event has attracted five firms, Dean McCall, the Beta Summit chairman, said. However, there is still an opportunity for others to apply by next Tuesday, he said.
“We are working with various technology groups to get the word out, but we can always use a few more applicants,” McCall said.
Last year, the initial response had 11 companies applying for six spots at the first beta summit with Ryan Kelly and Pear Analytics winning the first competition, Karen Rodriguez, the marketing director for this year’s San Antonio Innotech.
“We are hoping that we will get more applicants to apply for a position for our preliminary board Feb. 19,” she said.
Businesses interested in applying for the Beta Summit can call Rodriguez at 503-841-5285.
